How to get your private pilot license

Updated: Feb 13, 2023

In order to obtain a private pilot license, you will need to meet certain requirements set by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the United States, or the relevant aviation authority in your country. These requirements typically include:

  • Be at least 17 years old (16 for a student pilot certificate)

  • Be able to read, speak, write, and understand the English language

  • Pass a medical examination

  • Obtain a student pilot certificate

  • Log at least 40 hours of flight time, including at least 10 hours of solo flight and 5 hours of solo cross-country flight

  • Pass a written exam and a practical test (oral and flight) with an FAA-designated examiner or an authorized instructor

It is important to note that these requirements may vary depending on the country or region. You should check with your local aviation authority for specific details.

You can start by finding a flight school that offers private pilot training and then work with a certified flight instructor to meet the above requirements, and pass the tests.
